Cuddly Monsters Handmade
Addolorata Villa
Turquoise hippo monsters, shimmering green dragons and devilish red monsters are just some of the stuffed animals residents of Addolorata Villa’s memory support assisted living in Wheeling made for sick teenagers staying at Advocate Lutheran General Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge.
The seniors recently hand-deliver the stuffed monsters to teenagers at Lutheran General.
Addolorata Villa residents spent the past couple months making stuffed monsters with Halloween messages.
“These ‘monsters’ are soft and cuddly and should bring comfort to kids who could not go trick-or-treating this year,” Swanson said. “We think kids of all ages will get a kick out of receiving one of these cuddly monsters at Halloween.”
Also, this experience of giving to others is good for residents with dementia because it increases their feelings of self worth.
One of the residents who excelled at this project was Joe Catarello, who is a retired dentist and oral surgeon.
“The dragons he stuffed are perfect,” Swanson said. “As he tucked a star with a special message inside the stuffed animals, Joe would close his eyes and go into deep meditative prayer in anticipation of the healing it would bring each child.”
Addolorata Villa is a continuing care retirement community offering independent living, assisted living, memory support, skilled nursing and rehabilitation services.
